Spatio-Seasonal Hypoxia/Anoxia Dynamics and Sill Circulation Patterns Linked to Natural Ventilation Drivers, in a Mediterranean Landlocked Embayment: Amvrakikos Gulf, Greece

چکیده
Amvrakikos Gulf is a Mediterranean landlocked, fjord-like embayment and marine protected area suffering from natural, human-induced hypoxia/anoxia massive fish mortality events. Seasonal geophysical oceanographic surveys were conducted focusing on the water-circulation patterns at sill spatial-seasonal distribution of dissolved oxygen (DO) in gulf. Detailed sill, only communication route between gulf open sea, revealed two-layer water circulation pattern (top brackish outflow–bottom seawater inflow) role tide daily exchange. Statistical analysis known natural drivers DO (density difference Ionian Sea Amvrakikos, river inflow, wind) that horizontal density gradients strongly affect anoxia reduction seafloor oxygenation, while inflow wind mainly oxygenate volume/areas located above or within pycnocline range, with concentrations > 2 mg/L. Complex geomorphology well-formed internal basins contributes to development preservation low conditions below pycnocline. Finally, 43% 36% gulf’s total volume are permanently hypoxic, reach maximum 70% 62%, respectively, September July. This work tailored future ecosystem management plans, decisions, research coastal ecosystems.

Study of the reproduction of the Karamote shrimp Peneaus (Melicertus) kerathurus in Amvrakikos Gulf, western Greece
The reproduction of the karamote prawn, Penaeus (Melicertus) kerathurus (Forskål 1775), was studied for the native population in Amvrakikos Gulf (Ionian Sea; western Greece). Sampling was carried out on a monthly basis between June 1999 and May 2001. The results showed that the shrimp Penaeus (Melicertus) kerathurus reproduction period spans between late April and late September. The size-at-ma...
متن کاملDistribution of natural radioactivity in sediment cores from Amvrakikos Gulf (Western Greece) as a part of IAEA's campaign in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
The vertical distribution of natural radionuclides ((232)Th decay, (238)U decay, (40)K and (210)Pb) was assessed in sediment cores collected from the Amvrakikos Gulf, (Ionian Sea, Western Greece). Two collection stations were selected, the first at the western part of the Gulf near Preveza Strait (13A station) and the other near the centre of the Gulf (13B station). Activity concentrations were...
متن کاملEnvironmental variability and heavy metal concentrations from five lagoons in the Ionian Sea (Amvrakikos Gulf, W Greece)
BACKGROUND Coastal lagoons are ecosystems of major importance as they host a number of species tolerant to disturbances and they are highly productive. Therefore, these ecosystems should be protected to ensure stability and resilience. The lagoons of Amvrakikos Gulf form one of the most important lagoonal complexes in Greece. The optimal ecological status of these lagoons is crucial for the wel...

Natural ventilation performance in porous buildings is influenced by a wide range of interre...
متن کاملSeasonal variability in the Central Mediterranean Sea circulation
A high resolution eddy-resolving primitive equation numerical model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), is used to study the seasonal variability of the general circulation in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The model is run on a seasonal cycle, perpetual year simulation for five years, with nesting to the coarser resolution Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM), covering the whole Medit...
